Cards are well-loved in the Peakles household.  We like making cards and we like giving homemade cards too!

Peakles really enjoys this creative activity and will often make a card during her free time play at home or at nursery.  She is becoming more sophisticated in her choice of embellishments, card and theme.

Over the past few months it has turned from a glitter explosion on the paper to a glitter feast with a definite choice of colours and materials.  I decided to encourage this creativity and keep the cards she has made for future use.  The only time I wouldn’t do this is if she had a person in mind when she is making the card.

But if she is making the card just for the sheer enjoyment factor then why not keep it for future use?  I must spend a mini fortune on shop bought cards every year and yet Peakles can produce something cheerful and unique.  So this is what we are going to do over the next few weeks.

I have bought in the sales and thrift stores a variety of cut out shapes, different coloured papers, beads and other bits and bobs. Peakles has chosen a large pack of coloured ‘blank cards’ and matching envelopes.  We are now working towards having a selection of different cards.  We  began with a flower card that we then used as a ‘New Home’ card.

It does mean that the birthday that we occasionally miss or even that ‘how are you we thought we’d send you a card’ moment is catered for.  But deep down I secretly hope that she chooses some of them to send to me.  They are a snapshot of her creativity now at just over 3 years old.  I love the way she can compose the scene be it with flower embellishments, stickers or even just putting swirls of glue and adding the glitter to them.

Her ‘taste’ is beginning to evolve and we now have other colours rather than just the ‘pink’ phase that a lot of little ones seem to go through.

So why not try it.  Show your little one how to make a card just for the fun of making a card.  Put them in a box and use them as needed.
